What is a Moissanite?

Moissanites look very much like a diamond, but are oftentimes less expensive and more beautiful. It was discovered in 1893 by Dr. Henri Moissan and was named after him. It is found naturally, but is rare. So it is now recreated in a lab.

So what are the pros and cons of choosing a moissanite over a diamond?

Pros:

  • They are conflict free because they are created in a lab, rather than being mined.
  • They are more sparkly than a diamond (they have a higher refractive index) and have more of a rainbow sparkle.
  • Their clarity is almost flawless (because it’s created in a lab)
  • They have a hardness of 9.5 on the Mohs scale (diamonds have a 10 on the same scale).
  • That are heat resistant, just like a diamond.

Cons:

  • They don’t (yet) have the bragging rights that a diamond has
  • People think lab created stones are inferior to mined stones

There are no huge differences, between moissanites and diamonds, aside from moissanites being more affordable, more sparkly and conflict-free. So the next time you’re considering purchasing a piece of sparkly jewelry, you might consider a moissanite, instead of a diamond.
